Upper Hopton is small village of just less than 400 dwellings, on the south west edge of Mirfield, in the county of West Yorkshire. It is up on the southern side the Calder Valley, about 4 miles from the centre of Huddersfield. The population was 887 in September 2000 (down from 922 in 1991).

Upper Hopton Census & Community statistics details are available from Kirklees website. A Map of the   Location and Street Map are available from streetmap.co.uk , or an Aerial Photograph from multimap.co.uk.

On 1855 Ordnance Survey map (seeOld maps.co.uk) the village is still referred as Hopton. By the time the 1896 edition the two communities are referred to separately as Upper and Lower Hopton

The two most notable buildings are next to each other. St John's Church by Ignatius Bonomi & Cory dates from 1846. The design of the building and the stonework all add to the illusion of a genuine medieval church. Hopton Hall, a stone hall with short projecting timber frame wings, dates from the 16th century.
Not strictly in Upper Hopton is the Summerhouse of the now demolished Whitley Hall, marked on the maps as the Temple but usually referred to as 'Black Dick's Tower'.

Below are a number of photographs taken in Upper Hopton and the surrounding area.
